25 Dealer Tricks & How to Beat Them

Knowledge is power. Learn every trick dealers use so you can recognize and counter them instantly.

1Sales Floor Tricks

The Four Square

A worksheet divided into 4 boxes: price, trade-in, down payment, monthly payment. They shuffle numbers between boxes to confuse you.

Counter: "I'm only negotiating the out-the-door price. I'll handle financing and trade-in separately."

The Manager Game

"Let me check with my manager" - creates artificial authority and makes you feel the salesperson is on your side fighting for you.

Counter: "Great, bring the manager here so we can all talk directly."

The Takeaway Close

"Someone else is looking at this car" or "I don't think we can make this work" - creates false scarcity and panic.

Counter: "That's fine, I have other options. Let me know if things change." Then leave.

Lowball Trade-In

They offer way below market value for your trade, hoping you'll accept without research.

Counter: Get CarMax/Carvana quotes BEFORE visiting. Show them: "I have a $X offer already."

The Grind

Keeping you at the dealership for hours until you're exhausted and just want to leave with a car.

Counter: Negotiate by email first. Set a time limit: "I have 2 hours. If we can't make a deal, I'm leaving."

Good Cop / Bad Cop

Salesperson is friendly, manager is tough. Makes you trust the salesperson who seems to be helping you.

Counter: They're all on the same team. Focus on numbers, not personalities.

2Pricing Tricks

Market Adjustment / ADM

"Additional Dealer Markup" - arbitrary price increase above MSRP, especially on popular models.

Counter: Find dealers selling at MSRP or below. Email multiple dealers asking if they charge ADM.

Hidden Fees

"Dealer prep," "delivery fee," "reconditioning fee" - made-up charges that pad profit.

Counter: Ask for itemized breakdown. "What is this fee for? Remove any fee that isn't government-mandated."

Payment Packing

Quoting a monthly payment that secretly includes add-ons you didn't agree to.

Counter: Always calculate what the payment SHOULD be. If theirs is higher, ask why: "What's included in this payment?"

The Bump

After you agree to a price, they come back saying "the manager won't approve" and try to get more money.

Counter: "We had a deal. If you can't honor it, I'm leaving." Never give in to post-agreement bumps.

Dealer Packages

Pre-installed "protection packages" for $1,500+ that include $50 worth of products.

Counter: "I didn't request this. Remove it from the price." If they say it's mandatory, walk.

3Finance Office Tricks

Rate Markup

Bank approves you at 5%, dealer tells you 7% and pockets the difference as kickback.

Counter: Get pre-approved first. Tell them your rate and ask them to beat it, not match it.

Extended Warranty Fear

"Repairs are expensive these days. This transmission alone could cost $5,000." Uses fear to sell overpriced coverage.

Counter: "If I decide I want one, I'll buy it later from a third party at half the price."

The Menu

A list showing "packages" at different price points, all including products you don't need, making the base price hard to find.

Counter: "I want none of these packages. Show me the paperwork with just the vehicle purchase."

"It's Only $X More Per Month"

Makes expensive add-ons seem trivial. $30/month × 60 months = $1,800.

Counter: "What's the total cost of that product?" Always convert to total dollars.

Spot Delivery Scam

Let you drive home before financing is finalized, then call saying the loan fell through and you need to sign at worse terms.

Counter: Don't leave until financing is 100% confirmed. Get it in writing. Better yet, have your own financing.

GAP at Dealer Prices

Charging $700+ for GAP insurance that costs $20-50/year from your auto insurer.

Counter: Decline at dealership. Add GAP through your insurance company or credit union (often free with loan).

4Psychological Tricks

Building Rapport First

Extended small talk about family, hobbies, etc. to make you feel guilty negotiating hard against a "friend."

Counter: Be polite but keep it business. They're not your friend; they're trying to maximize profit.

Reciprocity

Offering coffee, snacks, giving your kid a balloon - creates subconscious obligation to "return the favor."

Counter: Accept or decline freely. You owe them nothing.

Test Drive Attachment

Extended test drives to let you "fall in love" and imagine ownership before discussing price.

Counter: Know your price limit BEFORE the test drive. The car should meet your needs, not exceed your budget.

"Today Only" Deals

"This price is only good today" or "The rebate expires tonight" - creates false urgency.

Counter: "If it's a good deal today, it'll be a good deal tomorrow. I don't make rushed decisions."

The Puppy Dog Close

"Take it home for the weekend, show your family!" - Harder to return once you've bonded with it.

Counter: Never take a car home without fully signed paperwork at the agreed price.
