Complete Car Buying Checklist

Print this checklist before you go. Check off each item to ensure you don't miss anything important.

Before Visiting the Dealer

Research & Preparation

  • Research vehicle market value (KBB, Edmunds, NADA)
  • Check actual listings for comparable vehicles
  • Get pre-approved financing from bank/credit union
  • Email 4-6 dealers for OTD quotes
  • Read dealer reviews (Google, Yelp, Reddit)
  • Determine your maximum OTD price (and stick to it)
  • If trading in: get offers from CarMax, Carvana, other dealers

Documents to Bring

  • Driver's license
  • Proof of insurance
  • Pre-approval letter from your lender
  • Printed email quotes from dealers
  • Down payment (check or proof of funds)
  • Trade-in title (if applicable)
  • Your research notes/price comparisons

At the Dealership

Vehicle Inspection

  • Check exterior for dents, scratches, paint issues
  • Inspect all tires for wear and matching brands
  • Check interior for wear, stains, odors
  • Test all electronics (radio, AC, windows, locks)
  • Look under the hood for leaks or damage
  • Check under car for rust or damage
  • Verify VIN matches paperwork

Test Drive

  • Test drive for at least 20-30 minutes
  • Drive on highway AND city streets
  • Test brakes at various speeds
  • Listen for unusual noises
  • Check steering alignment (should go straight)
  • Test transmission (smooth shifts)
  • Park and check visibility

CPO Verification

  • Request signed CPO inspection checklist
  • Get vehicle history report (Carfax/AutoCheck)
  • Verify CPO status with manufacturer (call with VIN)
  • Get CPO warranty terms in writing
  • Check for open recalls (NHTSA.gov)

During Negotiation

Price Negotiation

  • Negotiate OUT-THE-DOOR price only (not monthly)
  • Get all fees itemized in writing
  • Question any fee you don't understand
  • Use competing quotes as leverage
  • Be willing to walk away if needed

NEVER Say:

  • ✗ "I love this car!"
  • ✗ "My budget is $X"
  • ✗ "I can afford $X per month"
  • ✗ "I need a car today"
  • ✗ "I don't know much about cars"

In the F&I Office

Before Signing Anything

  • Verify final OTD matches negotiated price
  • Read EVERY document before signing
  • Check interest rate matches pre-approval (or better)
  • Verify loan term is what you agreed to
  • Look for any added products you didn't request
  • Take your time - don't let them rush you

Products to REFUSE:

  • ☐ VIN etching ($200-$400)
  • ☐ Rustproofing/undercoating ($500-$1,000)
  • ☐ Paint/fabric protection ($300-$800)
  • ☐ Nitrogen tires ($200-$400)
  • ☐ Dealer "Pro Pack" or similar bundles
  • ☐ LoJack/GPS tracking (unless you specifically want it)
  • ☐ Extended warranty at dealer price (buy elsewhere if needed)

Before Driving Away

Final Verification

  • Received both sets of keys
  • Received owner's manual
  • Received CPO warranty documentation
  • Received signed inspection checklist
  • Received vehicle history report
  • Received copies of ALL signed documents
  • Floor mats included
  • Temp tag/registration paperwork
  • Gas tank filled (or at least half)

After Purchase (Within 30 Days)

  • Register vehicle with DMV (if dealer doesn't)
  • Add vehicle to insurance policy
  • Review all paperwork carefully at home
  • Set up online loan account (if financed)
  • Schedule first oil change/service
  • Report any issues found during initial driving period
